The Caper – Dec/Jan – Holiday Hot off the Press Edition
The Holiday Season is upon us. Nothing beats driving into the Cape from Cape St. Claire Road and checking out that lit Christmas tree and guardhouse. NOTHING. Thanks to everyone who came out to light that tree up even through the nasty weather. In Beau’s Presidential message, he thanks all the volunteers who made the tree lighting extra special. Big thanks to Santa and Mrs. Clause for their generous hospitality.
Also in his message, he talks about the upcoming Annual Meeting, being held on Tuesday January 9th, 2024 at the club house. Don’t forget to grab your ballot in this month’s Caper. It’s also budget time so don’t forget to review this fiscal year’s budget. Beau goes into all of the details on what will need to change. Beau also discusses the proposed amendments to the CSCIA Bylaws, that will also need to be voted on. To view these in more detail, check out our website. Also, this will be the last Presidential term for Beau Breeden (at least for now… 😉). As always, Cape St. Claire is indebted to him for all of his efforts throughout the years. Frank Tewey, the Town Manager, in his message, talks about annual maintenance fee renewal time. The yellow postcards will be mailed out in late December.
In Community news, the Cape Garden Club will host a workshop on Tuesday January 2nd at 7pm at the clubhouse. They recently hosted two very successful events, their Terrarium Workshop back in November and recently their Evergreen Wreath Workshop.
On 12/9 Cape Conservation Corps will be doing Ivy removal at Deep Creek Marina. Their message this month gives their full year in review for 2023. Don’t miss this great article about all the ways they have helped to improve the community this year.
In the middle of the Caper, you’ll find the budget, ballot and biographies for the residents who want to serve the board. Take your time to read and review and don’t forget to cast your vote.

Several proposals to the community’s by laws are up for consideration. A vast majority of these changes are “housekeeping” matters to update terminology or to conform with changes to Maryland’s Homeowner Association laws, especially regarding Capital Reserve Study requirements. The Caper – November 2023 Edition
Now that another successful Halloween is in the books, the Christmas music has already begun. I can hear Mariah Carey singing in the background. Too early? That’s up to you to decide.
In Beau’s Presidential message in this month’s Caper he thanks many of the community members (Mary Lamb and Joe Peterson from Til Next Time Salon) for a very successful Movie Night held at the main beach. He also talks about Cape Conservation Corps successful fall plant sale along with the first En Plein Air event held at Little Magothy. So many great events in this great community. It’s also time to talk really serious CSCIA news. It’s BUDGET season! In this month’s Caper he lays out the budget for FY2025. Don’t miss it.
In Frank Tewey’s message, he also discusses the budget for FY25 and all of the details therein. It’s important for all of us to understand how CSCIA manages the communities money. In addition, the marinas will be winterized on November 30th with all the plumbing shut off and all lines drained at Deep Creek and Lake Claire. Mark your calendars slip holders!
In other community news, The Garden Club will be hosting their Terrarium Workshop on November 7th at the Cape St. Claire Clubhouse. Also mark your calendars for their Evergreen Wreath Workshop on November 29th. More details in side this Caper!
Cape Conservation Corps has a great write-up in this month’s Caper about the value of trees. In addition, they have information on their Ivy removal coming up on December 9th… location is TBD.
The 5th annual holiday tree lighting is scheduled for Sunday November 26th at 6:00pm at the Community’s Entrance Guard Shack. It’s a must see yearly event! Don’t miss it!
Santa is coming to the Cape St. Claire Clubhouse on Saturday December 9th, 2023. There are two time slots – 8:30 and 10:30am. These seats go quickly so I would view this Caper right now and submit it to Mary Lamb. Details and the submission form for this amazing event are in this month’s Caper!
Be sure to take the time and read through the budget for Fiscal Year 2025 … the whole thing is in this month’s Caper. It’s important.

The Caper – October 2023 Edition
It’s that time again! Time for pumpkins and cooler temperatures, falling leaves and apple pickings. As the seasons changes, we are reminded yet again why we love Cape St. Claire. In Beau’s Presidential message he discusses the newest law that went into effect October 1st. It’s HB 107 and has to do with a required Capital Reserve Studies for Homeowners Associations. He goes into much detail about how this affects the day-to-day operation of CSCIA and how it will affect you. There are a ton of details on this new law and he goes over all over it. I suggest you read this month’s Caper for all the details.
In Frank Tewey’s message, he asks that you get out to view the wonderful fall landscapes that the Cape has to offer. It’s a beautiful community and looks even better as the leaves change. He also reiterates what Beau had to say in his message. The Reserve Study has had a profound effect on how CSCIA will do business.
In community news, Goshen Farm is having their Harvest Pasta Dinner on Saturday October 14th from 5pm to 8pm at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. Check out their Facebook page and/or website for more details.
The Garden Club will be hosting their Harvest Dinner on Sunday October 15th. It’s a wonderful time to trade more garden stories and get to know one another better. New Guests & Members are always welcome so please RSVP by emailing [email protected]
Cape Conservation Corps is having their Cape Vibes Live music event and raffle and the main beach on October 8th from 2-6pm. They also wanted to thank everyone who supported their Annual Plant sale, especially Richard’s Tree Service for their sponsorship that provided the amazing reusable tote bags that were given out. Halloween Happenings is HERE! Thursday October 26th from 5:30pm until the candy is gone is Trick or Treating at the Cape Shopping Center. On Saturday, October 21st, join your friends and neighbors for a Halloween event in the clubhouse corral from 10am to 3pm. Please see this month’s Caper for more information on how to sign up for this great family event.

The Caper – September 2023 Edition
Summer is slowly transitioning to fall. How do we know? Kids are heading back to school. So many parents celebrated getting through another summer and the Return of the Classes. The September Caper also represents another transition marker to fall. In Beau’s President’s Perspective, he thanks the beach attendants (a yearly tradition!), Frank Tewey, the Town Manager, and Dottie and Matt the groundskeepers, for all of their hard work during the summer months. The rest of his message is spent with the budget for FY2025. Be sure to read his message in whole to get an understanding of what needs to be done this year and the changes a foot for FY2025.
Frank Tewey, in his message, discusses the amazing summer-time and then gives us great advice on how to properly handle yard waste for curbside collection by the County. Also, he gives a friendly reminder that the next membership meeting will be help on Tuesday, October 24th at 7:30pm at the clubhouse.
In community news, Goshen Farm announced that they secured a $60,000 state grant through the Maryland Capital Grants program. This grant is aimed at stabilizing the foundation of the historic Goshen Farm House. Don’t forget that their Fall Open House will be held on Saturday September 23rd 2023 from 10am – 4pm at Goshen Farm. Enjoy family activities, entertainment, history, and food. Explore the farm to learn about the history of Goshen Farm, the last Colonial-era farm on the Broadneck Peninsula.
Cape St. Claire Garden Club will have their annual Member’s Sharing Slideshow where members share photos about what’s new in their gardens. This will be on September 5th at 7pm at the clubhouse. In case you’d like to expand your gardening palate beyond our stalwart daffodils and tulips, you’re invited to join us on Tuesday, October 3rd for Speaker Charles Cresson of Hedgeleigh Gardens (co-hosted with the Annapolis Horticultural Society) on Minor Bulbs , like scilla, squill, grape hyacinth, and aconite. If you’re just as confused on what these are as I am, join them on October 3rd at the clubhouse.
Cape Conservation Corps has their upcoming talk from Alison Milligan on plant combinations on September 7th at 7pm (doors open at 6:30pm) at the clubhouse. On September 10th, join them from 4-8pm at the Main Beach for their free musical event with Cape Vibes. Also, on September 23rd, they will have their Fall Native Plant Festival and Sale. More details can be found on their website.
