The Caper – February 2022 Edition

Last time I did one of these, Jeff Roche was the President and it was unseasonably warm. Now? Jeff Roche has gracefully retired his Presidential gavel (with MANY MANY thanks to him) and it’s been a frigid January. What a difference a month makes. Congratulations to Beau Breeden for becoming President of the community again. We all know that Cape St. Claire will be in good hands.

In Beau’s “first” Presidential message, he thanks Jeff for his hard work over the last year. In addition, the board lost a valuable asset this past year in Jerome Zadera. He will be missed. Congratulations are in order to Joe Angel who has stepped up and gotten on the board for the next 3 years. We welcome his presence.

In Ryan, the Town Managers message, he mentions that the yellow postcards have been sent and a reminder that the yearly $10 dues are due March 1st. He also offers some snow removal tips so don’t miss out.

In community group news, the Youth Sailing signups will being on March 1st, 2022 at 5:00-6:30pm outside of the Cape Clubhouse. More information can be found on their website: http://www.capeyouthsailing.com

Goshen Farm will be participating in the Maryland Day activities on Saturday March 26th, 2022. House and Garden tours will be available by reservation only. For more information on this event please contact the Communications Chair at [email protected]. Their annual Java and Jazz will be help on March 13th from 3pm to 5pm at the Cape St. Claire clubhouse. More information on this event and membership renewals can be found in this month’s Caper.

The Cape Garden Club will again host the entertaining and informative speaker Claire Jones, a professional horticulturalist and landscape designer. Also on Sunday, February 20th, they will host their popular annual Winter Sowing Workshop. More information on these great events can be found in this month’s Caper.

Cape Conservation Corps offers up a great article from Stacey Wildberger about Native Evergreens Offer Year Round Interest. In addition, they are currently doing a membership drive. Go to https://capeconservationcorps.org/donate-now for more details.

Winter will continue it’s grip here in Maryland for the short term so stay warm! See you around the Cape!

Beach Restoration Project – Update 2 (1-12-2022)

Capers,

We wanted to provide an update on the Beach Projects after a few weather delays last week and challenging tides to start this week.

Work at Site 2 began over the holidays and you may have seen the installation of some of the Root Wads in water. There is more work to be done both adding Root Wads and & Oyster Reefs, but this will be halted to complete work at Site 1 first.

Site 1 work has commenced again today and all activity will be focused on completing Site 1 Main Beach during our Time of Year Restrictions for construction.

The crews will be off loading equipment back on Main Beach, demo some of the old walls damaged in the late October storms, build out the Cobble Bar/ Beach and Groin feature that is now finally permitted through all agencies. This feature has been the missing piece for helping protect homeowners properties, while providing access and stability to the shifting sands within the Main Beach Project Area.

Work is expected to take 2-3 weeks, depending on mother nature of course. Once Main Beach is completed, the focus will become Site 2, completing the entire project, including the Batten Board Groin.

Feel free to contact us with questions at [email protected]

Beach Restoration Project(s) Update

Capers,

We hope you had a safe and healthy holiday week with family & friends.

We wanted to take a moment a give a brief update on our Beach Restoration efforts as we shift focus on sites for the next couple of weeks.

At Main Beach, or Site 1, we will be cleaning up as we have completed dredge activities of the Little Magothy Channel and first phase replenishment activities along Main Beach shoreline. You will see some clean up, grading and removal of the turbidity curtain over the next couple days.

At Lake Claire Beach, Site 2, will begin staging operations and begin installation of oyster reef balls/root wads tomorrow hopefully.

Work at Site 2 will also include the installation of the vinyl sheet batten board bulkhead along the east side the boating pier over the next two weeks or so.

Please keep in mind, both sites are considered active construction sites, remain out of any areas marked, fenced in and off any equipment.

If you are out in the water, please remain at least 300ft from any moored barges or working barges for safety and navigational purposes. Especially kayaks, canoes and paddle boarders who may be trying to get an up close look, we have had some close calls and need to heed safety first.

After the New Year, we will post an update to the next phase of Main Beach restoration activities scheduled to be completed in January. Information on the project can be found here: https://cscia.org/cape-st-claire/beach-restoration-project/

Any questions, you can reach us at [email protected]

Thanks for your patience while we work to improve the local habitat & resiliency of our watershed in Magothy & Chesapeake Bay.
