Community Mosquito Program Spraying 2018
We all know the kind of nuisance a large number of mosquitoes can be to our quality of life. In addition, they can carry many diseases like West Nile encephalitis, eastern equine encephalitis and St. Louis encephalitis.
Due to the large mosquito population in the Cape, we will once again be participating in the Community Mosquito Spraying Program by the Maryland Department of Agriculture for 2018. “The Department’s preferred mosquito control strategy is the reduction of mosquito larvae numbers by source reduction, biological control agents or use of biological insecticides. Adult mosquito control, by ultra-low volume (ULV) application of insecticide, is conducted using aircraft or truck-mounted application equipment in residential areas for nuisance abatement and to protect public health from mosquito-borne disease.” ~source MDA’s website
We just received the day of the week from the MDA which tell us what day spraying will take place. The day this year is Wednesday nights between 7:00pm and 2:30am.
Regular season activity will begin by May 30th and continue to October 2nd.
If you would like to opt out of the program, please use the MDA’s submission form located on this page. In addition to the opt-out program, that page is another great resource from the state on mosquito spraying.

Summer is coming and we’re hoping it will be a safer one.
Soon, this gloomy April will be a thing of the past. There’s no better indicator that things are changing by the release of the Strawberry Festival Edition of the Caper. Beau’s message talks about the Pier Projects still ongoing which will hopefully be done soon. There’s also information in his message about the two County led projects which are starting up in May.
The Cape St. Claire Improvement Association is once again proud to sponsor the 16th annual Escape Through the Cape 5K run this Saturday April 14th at 8:30am. If you have to travel out of the community that morning, please consider leaving a little early or accounting for some rolling road closures along the race route. See attached map for route details.
It’s so hard to talk about spring right now. Mother nature can’t seem to make up her mind on whether she wants to warm up or stay cold. Winter doesn’t seem to want to let go as snow is in the forecast again.
Driving around the Cape over the weekend was like driving through a warzone. It’s a tough break when many around our community go without power for a long duration. We’re glad that most are back up. With the winds come change and there’s no doubt that spring is just around the corner. Beau’s message for this month tries to rally the community to help. There are many volunteering opportunities available for those that want to help. His message lays out the specifics on that.
The Cape is starting off the year with a giant bang. Beau, in his Presidential message, outlines many of the things happening around the Cape. He talks about how awesome it was to see all of the people out on the frozen Lake Claire. It sure was cold heading into this new year. Our Annual Membership Meeting was a success. I got reelected to the board, which means you’ll have to put up with these Caper updates for at least 3 more years. In addition, two new members are joining our ranks. Let’s congratulate, Matt Layman and Lisa Schmidt who are starting their first terms on the Board of Governors.
Love it or hate it, snow fall really brings some Christmas cheer to the neighborhood. For those who attended Meet the Santa at the Cape Guardhouse last Friday, the snow brought quite a beautiful ambiance. As 2017 comes to an end though, the first order of CSCIA business is casting your ballots for the Board of Governors at the January 9th 2018 meeting. At this meeting, you’ll also have the opportunity to vote on Fiscal Year 2019’s budget. Beau discusses these items as well as an update to the Beach Restoration & Erosion improvements project. Also, Mary Lamb has been working tirelessly to upgrade the clubhouse. Beau outlines the changes coming in his message. He gives updates on MANY of the projects still coming to this great community so don’t miss a word of it.
Santa is coming to Cape St. Claire on Saturday December 16th, 2017. He has lots of other visits planned, we’re sure, but we’re lucky to have him from 8:30am to 10:30am. Come down to the Clubhouse and bring all of your Santa fans with you, young or old. There will be a continental breakfast with fruit, donuts, bagels and cream cheese, cereal, juice, coffee, tea and hot chocolate. It’s only $5 for children and $6.00 for adults. To sign up, please download the form and return it with payment to 1180 Summit Drive, right here in the Cape.
