Cape St. Claire would love to thank Chesapeake Bay Trust and Anne Arundel County Watershed Protection and Restoration Program for our $298,868 grant to help rebuild our main beach. Announced today, this collective group awarded $1,117,528 in grants for 6 projects throughout Anne Arundel County.
We’d like to thank Lisa Schmidt, Cape St. Claire Improvement Association boardmember, for attending the announcement today, which was held at another awardee, Herrington Harbour’s location. CSCIA would also like to thank our partners, Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay and Biohabitats for helping us get this grant.

Summer really has arrived. It’s hot, humid and the thunderstorms have been aplenty. As we grapple with whatever mother nature throws at us, in the Presidential message, I wanted to touch on what it means to be a community. So often you read negative discussions about people and places around the Cape. Take a few minutes to read the message this month and live it.
Wanted to give huge props to Beau Breeden and Ryan Anderson and the rest of the board for securing $298,000 from CBT/WPRP for our beach restoration project. We are working towards securing additional funding and we will have details on that at the next Quarterly meeting which is scheduled for July 23rd at 7:30 at the clubhouse.
We hope you’re loving the new look and website. We definitely think it’s easier to navigate and important information is front and center.

Seems like only yesterday that the Strawberry Festival came to a close but we’re ready to celebrate the 4th of July with another parade and more festivities on the beach! Staging for the parade will begin at 9:30am on July 4th at the CSC Fire Department. The parade is set to begin right at 10am.
Prizes will be awarded for “Most Patriotic” and “Most Creative” so be sure to enter your group, team or family!
Welcome to CSCIA’s newest website. Over the last few months, we worked with Liquified Creative, a local marketing firm in Annapolis, to come up with a new look for our logo and brand strategy. Because CSCIA dates back to 1949, our logo and designs have been all over the place over the years. One of the goal we wanted to accomplish was to get something consistent. At the Strawberry Festival, several hundred people voted and declared your favorite. I present to you, the new CSCIA logo:

Also, over the last few months, CSCIA worked with Bill Szczytko, dork extraordinare for the Cape, to get a more streamlined look for the website. We hope it makes things easier to navigate. We welcome your feedback.

Hopefully, most of you know by now that the new playgrounds are open for business. Feedback has been pretty good and we’ve been excited to watch all of the kids playing on the new equipment. Ryan, our Town Manager, was instrumental in getting them done. He is celebrating his one year anniversary with the Cape, so please give him a thanks if you see him.
Also in this issue, in community news, The Garden Club thanks everyone for their support at the Annual Plant Sale on May 18th. It was a major success. In their message, they discuss mosquitoes and their common backyard sources. CCC is looking for volunteers to remove weeds from the Serene Ravine and the Little Magothy Rain Garden and in the fall at the Clubhouse Rain Garden. There’s a buzz of activity right now around the Cape in trying to get ready for the MAIN EVENT. The Strawberry festival is only a few short days away. The weather looks good. We’re very very excited. 10am. Parking is tough so don’t forget to check out the Berry Bus Stops which will help you get around. Don’t forget to check out all of our wonderful community organizations who will be setup through the festival grounds.
We all know the kind of nuisance a large number of mosquitoes can be to our quality of life. In addition, they can carry many diseases like West Nile encephalitis, eastern equine encephalitis and St. Louis encephalitis.
Due to the large mosquito population in the Cape, we will once again be participating in the Community Mosquito Spraying Program by the Maryland Department of Agriculture for 2019. “The Department’s preferred mosquito control strategy is the reduction of mosquito larvae numbers by source reduction, biological control agents or use of biological insecticides. Adult mosquito control, by ultra-low volume (ULV) application of insecticide, is conducted using aircraft or truck-mounted application equipment in residential areas for nuisance abatement and to protect public health from mosquito-borne disease.” ~source MDA’s website

Fogging can occur anytime between 7:00 PM and 2:30 AM
The fog program will begin on May 29.
Fogging will not begin until the community has been notified and we have received the Community Notification Verification Form

Hello Capers. We’re midway through Spring and what a busy few months it’s been. I’ve got the new Caper here in all its glory and it’s full of the usual goodness. Bill Szczytko, the President of CSCIA throws down a great Presidential message filled with wordy prose. He discusses the Sphinx and the University of Michigan all in the same paragraph. You shouldn’t miss it.
One thing that’s great to see is the number of new families that have come to the Cape. The Easter Egg hunt was packed this year, filled with laughter and new smiles. It’s wonderful to see.
** ALERT ** Please note that work has begun on updating the playgrounds at the main beach and deep creek. It’s been an open project since May of 2018 and it’s great to finally see it’s getting close to completion. More details here.

In upcoming events, the Cape St. Claire firehouse is having their annual Touch-A-Truck fundraiser on May 4th from 10am to 2pm at the clubhouse fields. The Garden Club is having their annual spring plant sale on Saturday May 18th from 8am to 2pm at the Cape Clubhouse field. More details on this great event are in this issue.

As many of you will recall, we put out a poll on this very website last May. https://cscia.org/playground-upgrades/ Our intentions were to replace both Cape St. Claire playgrounds with new, more modern, ADA compliant versions. After many many months of variance requests, we’re happy to inform all of you that work will officially begin on Thursday April 24th. The construction should take about 10 days to finish.
During construction, the swings, springs, and tether ball will remain open. The east side of the main beach play area will be closed during this time. Please be sure to stay away from these areas. Corn hole, the picnic tables and grills will be unavailable.
We’re sorry for the inconvenience this may cause but we promise it will be worth it!

Lots going on in the Cape these days. It’s springtime afterall. Bill talks about many of these things in his April Presidential message. If you haven’t paid that $10 maintenance lot fee, it was due by March 1st. Head on down to the clubhouse to take care of it.
Our variance was approved by Anne Arundel County for the playground on the main beach. We’re still waiting on work for the Deep Creek location. The goal is to have the new playgrounds in place by the Strawberry Festival.

In Community news, Goshen Farm is hosting their spring open house on April 13th 2019 from 10:00am to 4:00pm. Naturalist Liz Smith will present her magnificent native birds of prey, More details in this issue. On Sunday, April 7th, there will be a Cape Community Swap at the Cape Clubhouse field from 10am to 2pm. More details on this great event are inside! Cape Conservation Corps will be hosting their Project Stream Clean on Saturday April 13th from 9am – 12pm. They will be working to clean up the areas behind the ballfields and firehouse that have been recently restored. More details in this Caper.

Only in Maryland can you have a winter snowstorm and then follow it up the next day with a high of 60. What are you supposed to think about the seasons? Is Winter more like wring with a light dusting of Fall? I don’t know but it’s hard to keep up.
We have lots to talk about. Not in this post, of course, but in this months’ Caper. It’s packed full of Cape goodness. The ramblings from our current CSCIA President will leave you speechless. It ain’t Beau that’s for sure.
Goshen Farm is hosting their annual Java & Jazz/Tea tunes on March 10th at 3pm at the Goshen Farm. Cape Conservation Corps is hosting their amazing world of native bees, a free event, on March 22nd at 7:00pm at the clubhouse. The Spring Craft show looks to present a host of local wares on March 30th from 10-4 at the clubhouse. The Easter Bunny is coming on Saturday April 13th at the main beach! Mark your calendars! We’re excited to try and revamp and modernize our by-laws this year. We’re looking for flexibility for committee assigning as well as just modernizing the whole experience. We’ll have more details on that in the spring quarterly meeting on April 23rd at 7:30pm at the clubhouse.
