The February 2018 Caper is here!

The Cape is starting off the year with a giant bang. Beau, in his Presidential message, outlines many of the things happening around the Cape. He talks about how awesome it was to see all of the people out on the frozen Lake Claire. It sure was cold heading into this new year. Our Annual Membership Meeting was a success. I got reelected to the board, which means you’ll have to put up with these Caper updates for at least 3 more years. In addition, two new members are joining our ranks. Let’s congratulate, Matt Layman and Lisa Schmidt who are starting their first terms on the Board of Governors.

There are HUGE updates on the Beach Restoration project. I beg you to read what Beau has to say about it, it could be an amazing and exciting and awesome opportunity to get our local waterways and beaches fixed up.

Around the Cape, Goshen Farm is hosting their Coffeehouse Experience on March 11th, 2018 from 3-5 at the Cape Clubhouse. It’s free admission! The Garden Club is hosting a great speaking to discuss Bay-Wise Gardening at their meeting on Tuesday, February 6th at 7pm at the clubhouse. Cape Conservation Corps is hosting a book signing and presentation from Nancy Lawson to discuss her book The Humane Gardener. It’s at 7pm at the clubhouse. In addition, CCC is looking for a Habitat Hero, someone who has made changes to their own gardens and/or landscapes to create a healthy natural spaces for wildlife, and needs your nominations! For more information on this great initiative, see this month’s Caper.

Mark your calendars for the Easter Bunny who will be hopping into town on March 24th at the main beach @ 11am. Tickets will be available at Whimsicality beginning on February 19th.

As 2017 comes to an end though, the first order of CSCIA business is casting your ballots for the Board of Governors at the January 9th 2018 meeting. At this meeting, you’ll also have the opportunity to vote on Fiscal Year 2019’s budget. Beau discusses these items as well as an update to the Beach Restoration & Erosion improvements project. The Caper – November 2017 Edition

The winds of the season change blow the leaves down our streets. They get themselves into gutters and lawns and under your windshield wipers. The trees become brown sticks poking out of the ground. Fall is here in full and now that October is over and all of the great Cape Halloween/Fall festivals have gone silent for another year, it’s time to give Thanks. Beau does that in his great Presidential message in the November Caper.

With Fall, comes everybody’s favorite topic: The Budget. The budget continues to be forward looking in planning and with a strong focus on capital improvements, but also personnel. We beg you to take a few minutes and review the budget in this month’s Caper.

Don’t forget about CCC’s Harvest Bash coming up this Friday from 7pm – 10pm at the Cape Clubhouse. For ticket information, see this link. We also announce the photo contest winner for 2018, there’s a great message from the Cape Garden Club as well as an interesting write-up from Goshen.

Speaking of the holidays, SANTA IS COMING on Saturday December 16th from 8:30 to 10:30am at the Clubhouse. Please see the signup form and more information in this month’s Caper.

The October 2017 Caper is here!

Driving through the Cape, you can already see some of the falling leaves, the cooler temperatures to come only mean that there will be more leaves clogging up the sewer drains and spread out across your beautiful lawns. Seasons come and go and life around the Cape adapts to the cooling winds, the rainfall, and the humid air. As this summer comes to a close, Beau takes a few minutes in his message to reminisce about the Summer of 2017 that was and looks forward to the hopes and hard work of what’s to come. The October Quarterly meeting is right around the corner and that also means pumpkins and kids dressed in their scariest best. I should pause though before I get too far ahead of myself.

Lots of things are happening: We are in the beginning process of looking for a Town Manager. We’ve entered into the design phase of the Main Beach & Lake Claire Beaches improvement project. The July/August Caper has arrived!

The Cape has been a very busy place. We celebrated the start of summer with the amazing Strawberry Festival. We brought July 4th in with a bang with a great celebration. Residents make us all smile everyday. Their joy and the whole sense of neighborhood. Residents helping others is even more touching when you consider the story from over the weekend and how a group of Broadneck residents saved a man from drowning.

This month’s Caper is a double issue which means it’s double packed with amazing stories and images. Beau’s message is timely and important. Make sure you have your current stickers so you can take advantage of our wonderful beaches. Our Beach Attendants are working hard to keep it an enjoyable place to visit. Don’t forget that airborne fireworks are a no, no here in Maryland. Please refrain from using them for you and your neighbor’s safety.

Now go and grab your web copy now to check it out in all of its colorful beauty.

See you around the Cape!

Happy Birthday Cape!

June 30th, 1949. Russians were in the news that day. As it turned out, they had been seizing trucks outside of Berlin. Also that day, the papers announced that Truman’s housing and slum-clearance bill was passed by the House the previous night. It effectively started up the government subsidies for rental housing.

We could’ve picked up a pair of rubber beach sandals for only $2.50 or a diamond ring for $100… or both, they were running a pretty good discount at S and Katz in downtown Baltimore. It wouldn’t have been a big deal to swing by The Hub’s downtown store to grab a $14.88 Seersucker Suit.

We could’ve gotten our shopping done on the way to the very first Cape. St. Claire board meeting, held in the 1208 Munsey Building, now an apartment complex, in downtown Baltimore. It began promptly at 11am. There were 3 people present. James G. Rouse, James C. Morton, and George W. Baker. Was the room hot and stuffy? Were they sitting around and sipping from a bottle of $2.84 Kentucky Whiskey? Probably not, it was only 11am. Perhaps they were just sipping from their .15 cent Canada Drys. After driving their Studebaker’s? to the meeting, maybe they were thinking about Harry Truman’s message about expanding the program of highway safety. “Last year, 32,000 people were killed in traffic accidents and more than 1,000,000 people injured.” Maybe not. They couldn’t have been thinking about the Orioles as we know it today, they didn’t get here until 1953. The Yankees though, led by Dimaggio had topped the Red Sox 9-7 the night before.

That night maybe they watched Stop the Music by Bert Parks, a name that tune type of game show… it was on at 8pm on WJZ. What we do know was that the Cape St. Claire Club was incorporated on the 29th of June, 1949. They had to pay a bonus tax of $20 and a recording fee of $10. At the first meeting on the 30th, the bylaws were then adopted. They each elected themselves to the board. Due to the correspondences they were expecting, the secretary needed to hire an assistance to help out. $10 a week. After designating the Annapolis Banking and Trust company as a depository for the funds, they adjourned. Maybe they sat around and talked about what they had just done. Maybe they quickly dispersed into one of the scattered showers scheduled for that day.

Either way, I thank them.

The rest is history.

The June 2017 Caper has arrived!

Happy Birthday, Cape! The 14th marks the 68th anniversary of Cape St. Claire, seems like only yesterday. One only assumes, we’ll have a grand celebration for its 70th. In the meantime, summer is here and with that the Beaches and Parks crew have some friendly reminders for the upcoming season. It’s in Beau’s Presidential message so don’t miss it. He hopes that the Strawberry Festival was a successful one; for those that were there, we know it was.

A giant Thank You to the Garden Club for their work on the clubhouse. The plantings out front sure look swell. CCC has a great article on building hometown habitats and the importance of native plants, don’t miss it. The 4th of July celebration is coming up and there’s lots of information about it in this issue. Let’s all pray for sunshine, the last two years have had weather problems. Enough already.

We hope to see you at the quarterly meeting next month, July 25th at 7:30pm at the clubhouse. In the meantime, see you around the Cape!

The May 2017 Caper

At this time of year, the Cape is a busy place to live. So much to do and so much upcoming. Beau’s message this month talks about the busy schedules and also asks people to reach out to us to help. There are so many great things to volunteer for. Take a look at his message for opportunities and how to contact us. The Strawberry Festival is almost here and we’re all very excited. We are expecting record crowds again and we’ve expanded the Berry Bus Stops a little to account for it. See this issue for full information and sign up forms and a detailed map of the Berry Bus Stops.

Hopefully, many of you have checked out the wonderful plantings being done by the Garden Club at the clubhouse, they’ve done a great job. Don’t forget that the Annual Plant Sale is on May 20th from 8 – 2pm in the field at Broadview Drive and Cape St. Claire. This issue also has a great write up by Goshen Farm on their 2017 Excellence in Education Business award.

Now if only mother nature would get rid of the clouds and bump the thermostat a little, then it would feel like summer is right around the corner… trust us, it is! See you around the Cape.
